The 文昌 (study star) Study Corner: Where a Desk Works Hardest
文昌 is the scholar star, and classical practice assigns each person a study direction from it. The direction is personal and computable, because it comes from your Day Master. Two children in the same flat can have different study corners.
How is your 文昌 position worked out?
Each Day Master stem maps to one earthly branch, and each branch lives in one compass palace. Your 文昌 palace is where that branch sits on the compass. It is a table lookup, with no intuition involved. Table 1 lists all ten stems.
Table 1: Day Master to 文昌 palace
| Day Master | 文昌 branch | Palace | Direction |
|---|---|---|---|
| 甲 (yang Wood) | 巳 (Snake, Fire) | 巽 (southeast) | south-east |
| 乙 (yin Wood) | 午 (Horse, Fire) | 離 (south) | south |
| 丙 (yang Fire) | 申 (Monkey, ) | 坤 (southwest) | south-west |
| 丁 (yin Fire) | 酉 (Rooster, ) | 兌 (west) | west |
| 戊 (yang Earth) | 申 | 坤 | south-west |
| 己 (yin Earth) | 酉 | 兌 | west |
| 庚 () | 亥 (Pig, Water) | 乾 (northwest) | north-west |
| 辛 () | 子 (Rat, Water) | 坎 (north) | north |
| 壬 (yang Water) | 寅 (Tiger, Wood) | 艮 (northeast) | north-east |
| 癸 (yin Water) | 卯 (Rabbit, Wood) | 震 (east) | east |
Ten stems share eight branches, because 丙 and 戊 both use 申, and 丁 and 己 both use 酉. The sample here is 王大明, a fictional man born 1988-03-15 at 09:30 in Singapore, with pillars 戊辰 (Earth Dragon) 乙卯 (Wood Rabbit) 己巳 (Earth Snake) 戊辰. His Day Master is 己, so his 文昌 branch is 酉 and his 文昌 palace is 兌, the west.
Key facts
- The 文昌 branch comes from the Day Master stem, and 己 gives 酉, which is the 兌 palace in the west.
- The 學堂 (Study Hall) branch comes from the Day Master's element, and Earth gives 寅, the 艮 palace in the north-east.
- The sample's Eight House type is 震命 (East group), with Vitality (生氣) in the south, Heavenly Doctor (天醫) in the north and Longevity (延年) in the south-east.
- The sample's learning structure scores 70 (prominent), from resource (印) present (+10) and a 華蓋 (canopy, solitude) star (+10).
- In 2027 the annual star 4 sits in the south (離), a one-year bonus on top of the permanent 文昌.
- If no room sits in the 文昌 sector, the engine's advice is to face the 文昌 direction at the desk you have.

What is the difference between 文昌 and 學堂?
They are two stars with two keys. 文昌貴人 (study star) is the scholar star, tied to study, writing and examinations. 學堂 is the Study Hall, tied to natural learning and academic aptitude. The first is keyed on the Day Master stem, and the second is keyed on the Day Master's element.
Table 2: Study Hall (學堂) by element
| Day Master element | 學堂 branch | Palace | Direction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood (木) | 亥 | 乾 | north-west |
| Fire (火) | 寅 | 艮 | north-east |
| Earth (土) | 寅 | 艮 | north-east |
| 巳 | 巽 | south-east | |
| Water (水) | 申 | 坤 | south-west |
For the sample, 己 is Earth, so the 學堂 branch is 寅 in the north-east. His chart has no 寅 and no 酉 among its branches 辰 (Dragon, Earth), 卯, 巳 and 辰, so neither star is natal. The engine's desk card uses the 文昌 sector only. 學堂 is read as a marker of aptitude, not as a second desk position (method note). The symbolic stars guide explains the natal side of the same tables.
How do you apply it in a real home?
Three rules work together. Keep them separate, because location and facing answer different questions.
- Desk location. The desk goes in the room, or the corner of a room, that falls in your 文昌 sector. For the sample, that means the west of the unit.
- Chair facing. Face one of your supportive Eight House directions while working. The sample's are south (Vitality), north (Heavenly Doctor) and south-east (Longevity). His west is the 兌 position, which his 震命 chart labels Severed Fate (絕命), so his sector and his best facing point different ways.
- The fallback. Homes are finite, and someone's 文昌 sector is often a bathroom or another person's bedroom. If no room sits there, face the 文昌 direction at the desk you have, and keep the other rules. An auspicious setup at a solid desk beats a squeeze into the "correct" corner.
The engine prints the sector card and the Eight House card as separate outputs and does not rank them (method note). This guide treats the sector as the place for the desk and the Eight House directions as the way the chair faces.
What are the desk's own form rules?
The bed's doctrine has a desk-sized sibling. These are traditional form rules, offered as method and not as fact.
- Solid backing. Put a wall behind the chair (backing mountain, 靠山), which stands for support and focus. A window behind you calls for a high-backed chair as a substitute.
- Do not sit with your back square to the door. The commanding-position rule applies at a desk as it does at a bed. A door diagonally behind is acceptable.
- Wall or room in front? Facing a wall is fine if the door lies to your side or diagonally. Refuse the layout with a wall in front and the door square behind you.
- Annual bonus. Each year the annual star 4 visits one sector. In 2027 it sits in the south (離), so a reading corner there gets a one-year tailwind. The annual stars turn at Start of Spring (立春), 2027-02-04.
The house itself has a 文昌 position too. In a Flying Star chart, the facing star 4 of the period marks the house's study sector (method note). Your personal 文昌 and the house's 文昌 are separate checks, so one does not replace the other.

How does this work for a family?
Because 文昌 follows the Day Master, a family of five can have five different study palaces. Allocating bedrooms and desk corners becomes a small optimisation. The engine's rule per person is simple. If your own room is the 文昌 sector, put the desk there and face that direction. If another traced room sits in your sector, consider moving the desk there. If no traced room does, face the direction at your current desk.
What changes for Singapore and Malaysia readers?
- Compass first. For an HDB flat or condominium unit, measure the facing from the main door outward, then divide the floor plan into compass sectors. A room is assigned to a sector by the floor plan (method note). Rooms that straddle two sectors need a choice.
- Shared rooms. Where two children share a bedroom, their Day Masters may differ. If two Day Masters point to different sectors, a single desk cannot satisfy both. Use the fallback for one child.
- Day Master. The Day Master comes from the day pillar. Singapore ran on UTC+7:30 before 1982-01-01 and UTC+8 after it, and Malaysia has used UTC+8 since 1982-01-01. A birth very close to a day boundary needs the right offset.
- Annual star. The 2027 annual stars begin at Start of Spring on 2027-02-04, not on 1 January.
FAQ
What is the 文昌 position and how is it worked out?
文昌 is the scholar star. Each Day Master stem maps to one earthly branch, and each branch lives in one compass palace. It is a table lookup with no intuition involved. For a Day Master 己, the 文昌 branch is 酉, the 兌 palace in the west.
Can two children in the same flat have different study corners?
Yes. Because 文昌 follows the Day Master, two children in the same flat can have different study corners. A family of five can have five different study palaces. A shared room with two different sectors needs the fallback for one child.
What if my 文昌 corner is a bathroom or another person's bedroom?
If no room sits in the 文昌 sector, face the 文昌 direction at the desk you have and keep the other rules. An auspicious setup at a solid desk beats a squeeze into the correct corner.
How should my study desk be placed?
Put a wall behind the chair for support and focus, and do not sit with your back square to the door. A door diagonally behind is acceptable. A window behind you calls for a high-backed chair as a substitute.
How do I find the 文昌 sector in an HDB flat or condo in Singapore or Malaysia?
Measure the facing from the main door outward, then divide the floor plan into compass sectors. Assign each room to a sector by the floor plan. Rooms that straddle two sectors need a choice.
